The level system works as follows; your Pokemon level up every so many battles, say your Pokemon is a level five, and it battles another level five and wins, this adds one to your level up count. If it is a level five battling a level six, you will add two, seven you will add three. Suppose your Pokemon is a level six battling a level five, if it wins it will only progress half of a level count, this goes for any Pokemon battling a lower level Pokemon, no matter how high compared to how low. A level five Pokemon's level count will start 0/5. If it wins a battle against a level five Pokemon, it will be 1/5. If it wins another battle against a level six Pokemon, it gets two level points, so it would be 3/5. Also, attacks don't have to be real attacks, for instance, you could tell your geodude to cause a teetering rock to fall on you opponents pokemon. This also goes for dodging, but they still count as dodges.

The battle system is not that confusing. The challenger attacks first, so he writes a paragraph something like this,
Drake glared at his foe, the punk had disrespected his training ability, so now he was ready for a battle! Drake had just chosen his Nidorino to battle with his opponents Horsea.
"Nidorino! Posion Point!"
His valiant friend charged the Horsea prepared to jab it with its venomous horn.
God-modding is not allowed on this forum, so he could not say something like this,
Drake glared at his foe, the punk had disrespected his training ability, so now he was ready for a battle! Drake had just chosen his Nidorino to battle with his opponents Horsea.
"Nidorino! Posion Point!"
His valiant friend charged the Horsea prepared to jab it with its venomous horn. The barb struck its target, a direct hit! The Horsea became ill and was faced with sudden pain!
This is unfair to your opponent. You must give your opponent a chance to dodge, but remember, five doges are all that's allowed per a Pokemon. Moves like agility and double team add one dodge to your dodge count.
So then, each battle is overseen by a moderator. The moderator will decide if status problems are afflicted with certain moves like poison point or sleep powder. This is completely unbiased.
Health is also determined by the moderator. Health ratings are as follows, High, Medium High, Medium, Low, Very Low, Faint. The final health rating means that Pokemon is out of the battle. Due to over complexities, Potions and other items are not included. This maybe subject to change in the future, and if so you will be notifieed.
With each attack, all the Pokemon which have entered the battle must have there Health State, and Status Problems listed, like this,
Nidorino:High,---
The three dashes indicate no Status Problems are in effect.
Here is what a battle might look like.
Drake- "I challenge you!" Drake shouted at the Anne, the Pewter City gym leader. Drake reached for his Nidorino's pokeball that rested in a pouch on his belt.
"Go Nidorino!"
Anne- "Hah! This will be a good warm up in case any challenging trainers show up today! Go Geodude!"
Drake-
Nidorino:High,---
LV. 8 5/8
Drake panicked when he say the Geodude emerge from it's pokeball. He new his Nidorino would probably not poison it, and that ground type Pokemon are less effected by ground type attacks. But fighting moves are a weakness!
"NIdorino! Use Double Kick!"
Anne-
Geodude: High,---
LV. 10 3/10
Anne wasn't expecting this young trainer to know much about fighting pokemon! She commanded Geodude to evade the attack, and counter with a rock throw!
(Now the moderator will interlude in the battle, asking if Drake would like to evade Anne's attack. In this case, Drake decides not to. Now the moderator posts a damage report.)
Moderator-
Nidorino-High/Medium High. No new status Problems
Geodude- -One dodge. Fighting type move inflicts extra damage. Medium High. No new status Problems.
(Now the battle continues with it being Drakes turn, if Drake doesn't respond within a day, it becomes Anne's turn, if he does not respond within three day's, he loses the battle. The same would apply to Anne)
Drake-
Nidorino:High/Medium High,---
LV. 8 5/8
Drake saw the effect's of Nidorino's attack and was impressed! He decided it would be best to try and effect the status of Geodude and commanded Nidorino to try and poison Geodude!
Anne-
Geodude: Medium High
4/5 Dodges
Anne saw the attack strike Geodude, but it didn't seem to phase him! With a triumphant laugh she shouted, "Geodude! Seismic Toss!
Moderator- Will Drake use an evade?
Drake-No.
Moderator-
Nidorino: Medium. No inflicted status problems.
Geodude: Medium High/Medium. Poison takes effect next turn. Take notice in your role-play Anne.
So the fight goes on like this till one battler is out of Pokemon. All battles must take place in the Battles Forum, with the exception being Gym Battles, these take place in the Gym's Forum.
To get a badge, You must either battle a Gym leader and win, or join a Gym and perform an important action for a Gym leader, you must be offered to do this by a Gym leader and cannot request a mission.
That's about it. Any questions should go into the Questions and Suggestions forum.
